Guy and I talk all about “To Stash, or not to Stash”… that is the question. Reasons to and not to, unloading your mountain o’ fabric, and more — we had lots of fun!
oops! I forgot to add the pictures of my quilting stash when I first posted this blog… here goes!

Here is my main stash, out in the garage because I don’t have room for it in the house. You can’t see it all the way down to the floor, but there are 84 boxes of stash.

This is my “inside” stash — the Ikea shelving unit that I talked about in the podcast where I described my quilting studio. Some of the buckets are missing because I needed them to display Quilt Journals at a quilt show. I need to take a better pciture of this : p

The smallest quilting stash in the world belongs to my niece, Beth. This is it! Can you imagine your stash fitting on a table top with room to work on a project?! I think I need to help her out with some of my stash… what do you think?
Happy Quilting!

Just a few thoughts:
1) I love your podcast. It’s because of you and QS that I reignited the fires of fabric-passion and started making my first quilt in more than a decade. I still suck at sewing, but I love the process.
2) Great book recommendation: Quilter’s Playtime: Games with Fabrics by Dianne S. Hire. *swoon*
3) about stashes, aimed mainly at Guy —
The difference between woodworkers buying lots of wood and stockpiling it (which my in-laws do, by the way), and quilters/fabric artists stashing fabric is that wood doesn’t go away, get discontinued, or have limited editions. I’ve gone back to a store looking for a fabric and if it’s really good — it’s GONE. Unless a woodworker’s using endangered woods (and in which case, shame on the woodworker), there’s always more. Somewhere.
We have a scarcity issue, which makes stashing just fine. 🙂
Hi Annie
I am a knitter too, but am new to quilting and really love your podcast ( tell Guy I am the other one listening!)
I think the idea of a workeable stash is great and look forward to seeing colour coordinated ones for sale, that would be neat.
As far as our home contents go, my parents did a novel thing, they had a give away party when they went into a retirement home, they invited anyone they knew and loved to a party and if people liked something they just took it away with them At the time it felt very strange but actually I now think it is quite novel. They live in a small space with ikea furniture and have very little material things in their home. I have another blog on downshifting as simplicity is also a new thing for me. Please keep your podcast going, I learn a lot from that and am inspired to have a go although cutting the fabric is hard with the rotary cutter! Maybe its the blade?
Anne and Eliza,
Thanks for the feedback. It appears that BOTH listeners posted feedback on Annie’s podcast this time.
Actually, we are surprised at how many listeners we really do have. Over the past few months, we’ve tripled our listenership. As long as you keep listening and sending feedback, Annie will keep podcasting.
We really have a lot of fun with this web site and we plan to do much more with it. Stick around and watch us grow.

Annie’s Husband
I have just discovered the wonderful world of podcasts (curtesy of my geek son!) and was so pleased to find them about my interests – quilting, sewing, scrapbooking, etc! I love your podcast – I feel like I’m sitting in the same room and your husband’s comments had me chuckling – told my hubby I’m getting an FM transmitter for my I-pod so he can hear what I’m laughing at!
Your comments RE: stash “management” particularly were appropriate when today I read in the paper about a poor woman in Wash. state who was found dead -crushed by her own “clutter” from years of hoarding while trying to clear some space – no joking this was a true story! Wanted to send you the article but didn’t see any e-mail addy that I could.
Anyway – I don’t feel to bad about my “stash” and other clutter after reading that article!
Looking forward to your next podcast – excellent job!

Just thought I’d drop you a note to say how much I enjoy your podcasts and to send belated condolences on the loss of your mother and belated congratulations on the marriage of your son.
I’ve only been quilting for 6 or 7 years or so but I love it and I’ve collected a “substantial” stash. Can’t help it – gotta have it – might use it – someday. I have so many kits and UFO’s it’s not even funny. I feel guilty (for a minute) but then my eye is caught by something pretty and shiny over there – oops – off I go. I do actually get some things done. I have been involved the last 4 years at my LQS in making Marti Michel quilts. We do them over a 12 month period and then start a new one. They are lovely quilts. This last weekend was my 50th birthday and I spent the day at a quilting class making a Slice em and Dice em quilt out of batiks – should be gorgeous – something nice to commemorate the day. I’ll post a picture when it’s done.
My husband is also the computer guy! When you mentioned ‘skype’ in your podcast, I almost fell off my chair. I love it! Isn’t technology wonderful? We have 7 computers in our house – we use VOIP almost exclusively and everything is networked and computerized to pieces. It’s great. Before I had to leave work for medical reasons, I, too was a techie, so we both love to play with computers. You can imagine ……
This long winded note is basically to say – keep up the great work both of you – I love your podcast – I would greatly miss it. I will probably never get to where you are (I am in Barrie, Ontario, Canada) but I love to hear about what it going on there. I’m looking forward to your next podcast!
Cheers!
Cathy
I have just been quilting for a year now but I am obsessed! I have painted, created pottery, attempted printmaking but nothing compares to quilting. This art form feeds my soul like no other. I love your podcast, it is providing information on many aspects of the quilting world that might take me years to learn about. Plus, listening to your podcast at the gym has made my workout so much more enjoyable! Thank you so much for everything!!
Hello Annie,
I just finished listening to the great stash debate and here are my 2 cents:
My fabric stash is my best friend because it has colors in it that go in and out of style. That perfect red may not be on the shelves of my local quilt shop this season, but it was popular back in 1998, so I might have a piece to use in my latest project. And the fabrics in my stash have all become associated with memories– where I lived when I bought it, what I was thinking when I bought it, who gave it to me– and when I use them in a quilt I feel much happier than when I use a piece I just purchased to fill in.
Anyway, I agree that an out of control stash is not doing anyone any good, but a little stock pile of your favorite things is really useful! Even if you just look at it most of the time.
I really enjoy your show, and thanks for keeping me company while I sew.

Hi Annie,
I’m a big fan of your podcast!
I just wanted to thank you for the information on Quilt Pro for Mac. My husband and I have 4 Macs at home and he has one at work. I had just ordered Electric Quilt 5 because, at that moment, it was the only choice I had. I’m happy to hear Quilt Pro has come out with something I can use on my new iMac. Can you give me some information on the difference between the two?
Thanks so much, Tracey Van Slyke
