  1. I very much enjoyed Diane’s interview. The contagious enthusiaum she exudes is truley thrilling. I loved things she said about being true to your own vison of quilting, and seeing each quilt through to the end. What- not UFO’s? That is cause for reflection. I have always machine or hand quilted my own quilts- except for a king, my first year. I am still new enough at everything after only 5 years that I never doubted I couldn’t do it. I think I must be niave or stubborn!

  2. I love how Diane said that quilting is like music – I am a musician by trade, and quilting is my hobby! I also enjoyed her enthusiasm for quilting – and picked up on it very quickly. Thanks for sharing that interview with us, Annie!

  3. What a fabulous interview with Diane. I have always admired her quilt Butternut and it was nice to hear the story behind it.

Annie, I impatiently wait for each podcast.

  4. What an AWESOME pod-cast! ( Not that the rest aren’t :0) ) You are sooooo lucky to have been able to chat with D.G. !!!! I’m jealous. I sat down tonight and free motioned on a table runner that I had totally intended on grid quilting with a walking foot – thanks a ton for the inspiration :0) Also found out the hers and mine lineage is similar too. Kinda cool. Hmmmm, maybe someday….. Keep up the great pod-casts Annie :0)

  5. Another podcast! Yes! I love your podcasts, Annie. I listen to them while I am sewing. I’m anxious to listen to this one. I’ve studied Diane’s Machine Quilting book. My internet has been down all week. I’m going quickly to download the podcast incase our modem gets sick again.

    Take care,
    Becky in Georgia

  6. What a wonderful interview. I’ve read and heard so much about Diane but I’ve never heard her speak! The interview was nothing less than inspiring. Annie, thanks for giving a voice to all the wonderful artists in the quilting industry!

  7. Love your podcasts, Annie, and this one is a real standout! I’d love to watch Diane in action! She does amazing things — like no one else — with her domestic! She’s a real inspiration. Thanks to you and Diane for letting me be inspired! I’m going to use silk thread and wool batting next time!

  8. I have always been intimidated by machine quilting, but I am newly inspired to try again. Thank you Annie, for sharing this informative and inspirational interview with Diane Gaudynski with us. It is one that I plan to listen to again.

  9. I thoroughly enjoyed your interview with Diane Gaudynski. I appreciate that there is no time restriction, and that converstations can flow. Great job. I’m a great fan. Paula Donn

  10. Thank you Annie for the wonderful interview with Diane. I recently took a free-motion quilting class and really enjoyed it. Her tips for blocking the quilt is very helpful. It was nice to hear about someone “breaking the rules” and not following the norm. I find myself always wondering if it’s possible to do something. After listening to Diane, I’m sure I’ll be able to get those ideas out of my head and finally try it! Thanks Annie for your podcasts!

  11. Diane is truly inspiring – I love the fact she does all her own quilting as I’m like that too and I love doing free-motion. As you say your “conversation” was so easy with her – I couldn’t believe how after listening it seemed almost “short” and realised it had been over an hour long!! Another great and informative podcast!

  12. I never know what I will learn when I listen to your podcasts. Diane’s interview is wonderful. I immediately went to her site. Here quilts are just gorgeous. I didn’t know that you could machine quilt like this. So inspiring. Thanks.

  13. Thank you, Annie for a great podcast. I loved the interview with Diane and found it quite timely as just this past week I started to free motion quilt a runner top. This is my first free motion project ever so I took great interest in hearing Diane’s history and how she developed her talent and technique. I also enjoyed listening to both of you as you discussed your insights into creating and teaching. Thanks again and I look forward to your next podcast.

  14. I have to echo all the other comments – what a great interview. I could have happily kept on listening. I am very curious though, about the opening and closing of the door all during the interview. Where were you?
I’ve got a small stash of completed quilt tops and maybe I will try to quilt them myself. I certainly like the idea of the silk thread; might give that a try.
    Thanks for a wonderful podcast!

  15. Annie, I loved the podcast! It was so interesting to learn how Diane designs and works on her quilts. I love her personality and thought it so interesting how she related her heritage to how she approaches quilting–I’ve got to figure out who to blame for all my UFO’s–Irish, English, definitely not German!LOL I really enjoy all of your podcasts, but this one was really outstanding.

  16. Here in the Netherlands I listen to your podcast for more than two years and sometimes (like today) I’m driven to tears. I listened to the interview with Diane and she said the perfect thing to me (so I felt it). Make quilts as YOU like them! I always get strange looks and comments like: “you’re always making the blocks diffents from ours, not the way it should be”, and “there you have Annemieke again, always something else”. I sometimeS feel SO insecure but Diane made me cry today. She’s right! I’m going to do my quilts in my own way as I like it, wether other people like it or not! And I’ll get my inspiration from Diane, for instance and from you Annie, thank you!!!

  17. Thank you for the interview Annie. Diane’s website is equally inspiring – especially enjoyed her tips. The quilting is amazing and love the fact she named the quilt for her Dad (having lost my dad in the last year I can appreciate the sentiment). Again, thank you. Dee

  18. Thank you again Annie for another GREAT podcast. Your conversation with Diane was truly inspiring. I am also looking forward to trying silk thread the next time I attempt quilting on my machine; as well, I was quite moved by Diane’s comment “Make what you love.”

  19. I loved the interview with Diane. Every time I finish a top and get ready to quilt it I pull out Diane’s book to refresh my memory on needles, thread and staying relaxed. “Guide to Machine Quilting” is absolutely indispensable to me.

  20. What a great interview. Aside from the quilting aspects, I immediately felt a kin-ship with Diane when I heard her rollin’ o’s of the upper midwest. I’m from South Dakota and whenever I hear someone with this accent, I feel at-home! Sigh. Nostalgia is a wonderful and at the same time sad feeling. I miss my roots sometimes!

I’m an almost-beginning-but not-quit-yet machine quilter who is terrified of my machine and green-ness. Diane gave me a little more courage.

  21. Annie,
What a great interview. It was so easy to listen to and to hear Diane speak from her heart. It was insightful and inspirational to me.
    Thanks for all you do,
    Eileen

  22. I just finished listening to the interview with Diane Gaudynski! What an inspiring talk! I’m in my sewing room listening, preparing for the last class that I am teaching to my “sampler” beginners here in Ridgefield, CT. I just know that the wonderful feeling that I have about getting in there and sewing and quilting — will at least to some extent transfer to my students tonight. What a wonderful thing to be able to do — inspire new quilters.

Thanks for the wonderful podcast. Keep up the good work.

  23. I enjoyed your talk with Diane – she is an inspiration to just jump in and do what YOU like. As always, it feels like I’m sitting in on a conversation around the kitchen table. Keep up the wonderful interviews.

  24. Such a great interview with one of the world’s machine quilting goddesses! I never knew there was any other option than to quilt your own quilts when I started quilting only a bit more than a year ago, but, alas, I already do have a few UFO’s. 🙁 Love the show, Annie, and I am enjoying Laura Wasilowski’s book (got it a few days ago–Thank you so much!) Please know that all your hard work is going to a good cause. Your enthusiasm for what you do (and obviously love) is certainly a blessing for all of us, whose lives you touch on a regular basis.

  25. You know, I have to say that my first impression of Diane was that she was a very serious person. Her photo looked serious. I saw her on Simply Quilts and she was very serious. And her quilts are so detailed and so exact. But then I read Guide to Machine Quilting and laughed out loud in a few places. That doesn’t happen very often when reading quilting books! And in this podcast her marvelous personality and sense of humour shine through. I’ll bet she’s a lot of fun to hang out with. And, I could look at her quilts all day! Thanks, Annie, for the interview, and thanks, Diane for the inspiration.

  26. I loved the interview with Diane. I have read all of the articles that were in the AQS publication and have seen some of her quilts at AQS shows. Amazing work. I very much related to the straight line walking foot quilting with some stippling. I hope to someday master enough freemotion to be presentable. All of my work is done on a home sewing machine. I just discovered this website and will be a regular.

  27. Dear Annie- I am sitting here at work
(I manage my parents’ H & R Block tax office) trying to get all my work finished by April 15, catching up on your podcasts. I know this is silly, but there were several times that I became teary-eyed listening to your interview with Diane. I think I have listened to almost all of your podcasts and this one is my very favorite. I cant wait to see my sewing room and my sewing machine again. I’ve been too busy to quilt.
I intend to send you a donation as soon as tax season is over and I can balance my checkbook and pay my bills that I’ve been too busy to pay.
So, thanks for making an exhausting catch up at work Sunday a pleasant day.
