Program 123 – Reading About Quilts

Quilting Stash – Program 123, Reading about Quilts
podcast
Running time: 01:10:05 Size: 24.1MB

I love to read. I love to get into the world that I’m reading about, only to be surprised when someone speaks to me and I wake up “out of the book” to find that I’m still sitting on my living room sofa. I love to drink deeply from the written word, to get intimate with the people and situations in each story.
(WebGuy’s Note: Annie’s family is happy when she is done “drinking”, finishes her book, and rejoins our family. Annie is known to stay up until 4:00 in the morning finishing a book with which she is obsessed — Annie then has to “catch-up” on her sleep.)

The books I will share in this program:

Robin’s book –

“Twilight” New York Bestseller, written by Stephenie Meyer. I have to blame Sandi Henderson, of Portabello Pixie who shared the trailer for the upcoming movie on her blog before she left for Spring Market. ; )
Here’s a link to the trailer:

So if you get sucked in to the books, don’t say I didn’t warn you! Just don’t do it if you have a deadline.

To visit author Stephenie Meyer’s website, go to Stephenie Meyer.com.

Another great book that I had to read TWICE (and back-to-back even) is featured in this podcast, “The Girl Who Stopped Swimming” by Joshilyn Jackson.

I had the pleasure of interviewing author, Joshilyn and the Art Quilter who inspired her character “Laurel”, Pamela Allen.
It was so much fun to talk with these influential ladies, Joshilyn from Georgia and Pamela from Canada, on the phone. Did I mention lately that I LOVE technology?!

Have fun listening to the interview, then come back here to the links for Joshilyn’s and Pamela’s websites — and to leave a comment for the opportunity to win a copy of the book.

Joshilyn’s website is Joshilyn Jackson.com.
Pamela’s is Pamelart.
On Pamela’s website, you will be able to see the quilt that Joshilyn commissioned her to make for the book and her “Two Sisters…” quilt that we discussed in the interview.

Coming up very soon… an interview with Terri Thayer, author of the runaway hit, “Wild Goose Chase”.

Also, stay tuned for a Spring Quilt Market review with Quilting Stash listener (and friend), Phyllis Barnett!

Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win my copy of “The Girl Who Stopped Swimming”. I will draw the winner on May 25th!

  1. My 15 year old daughter is OBSESSED with the twilight series and has gotten all her friends to read it. When she asks me when I’ll read it, I say soon, when I’m thinking – as soon as I have about 4 days of nothing to do.
Can’t wait to hear about Annie’s book, sounds good and I’m always looking for something good. By the way, I buy audiobooks from Audible.com they are cheaper than Itunes. It’s such a better way for me to read a book.

  2. I enjoyed this podcast so much! I was working on an art quilt and listening to you talk about how you enjoy to read. I do the same things when I find a book that draws me into the pages and won’t let go. Thank you for the book reviews of author Joshilyn Jackson. I will have to go and buy the book now. I will carry the image of the art quilt Pamela made in my thoughts as I read the book.
    Annie, Great Interview!!
Thank you for addiing so much to our quilting lives,
    Dian

  3. Holy moly, I want to see the movie and read the book. Thanks for links to the quthors. Dee

  4. Love your podcast, it keeps me in my quilting room much more. I always enjoy recommendations for books to read.

  5. I just listened to your podcast. I think I’ll be buying that book. (Unless I win it!)

  6. Loved the podcast, the discussions about the book “hooked me” I will have to read it. Was also very intrigued by the references to Alabama, since that is where I live.

    Happy quilting!

    Brenda

  7. I would love to read this book. Wow it sounds great. If I do not win I will buy the book.

  8. Have loved Pamela’s quilts for quite awhile, the book is on my summer reading list. Great interview, first time I have visited, but I for sure will be back.

  9. Pamela’s new book The Masters- Art Quilters is on today’s daily blog of The Quilt Show! I saw it just before listening to this podcast.

What a fun interview and I look forward to reading Joshilyn’s book. The pictures of the quilt are fabulous.
I took your recomendation on Terry Thayer’s book too. I think I was a bit under the weather so a good excuse for an indulgent read marathon.

Happy 3rd Anniversary- what gift of a family you have, who cherish you and what you do.
Hope to ‘talk’ to you soon! Good Luck with the move.

  10. I am enjoying this interview so much! I am in the middle of it. I’ve gone to Pamela’s website and seen the quilt. I’m always so surprised by people’s motivation spurred on by their life’s experiences. I’ll never be a art quilter, but I can certainly appreciate art quilts. One obsession that I once had which I often shared with students during my teaching years. A student kept urging me to read Stephen King novels and I reminded him that I did not read horror stories. He insisted and gave me The Stand. I was definitely obsessed with the book and gave the students seat work so I could read. I was “into” the book while my middle school classes moved in and out in the classroom. I’m going to get this book and suggest it to my book club group

  11. Have already added Joshilyn’s book to my list of “Summer Reads” – she comments about reading for the “audiobook” – is that on Audible.com – as I don’t see it there (or at leasts not yet!)? Even tempted to look into “Twilight” – always good to hear someone else’s recommendations on books! Thanks Annie!

  12. Thanks for the book recommendations, they are going on my summer reading list.

  13. I enjoyed the podcast and thank you for the book recommendations. I am almost afraid to order Twilight, but since you so highly recommend it, I am stopping by Amazon as soon as I am finished posting here. (This will make me lose a few quilting days but Thank you anyway Annie!) I may just have to order the whole series 🙂 Sort of like when we need the whole collection of fabric 🙂

P.S. I love the new look of the site!

  14. oops, forgot to change the site ref… my last comment after Diane’s interview somehow ended up as my URL.
    Sorry ’bout that

  15. I really loved “The Girl Who Stopped Swimming.” Can’t wait to listen to the podcast.

Great job, Annie. I really enjoyed the Mary Lou Weidman and Diane Gaudynski podcasts. Sure makes the Y time fly by.

I’m a little behind in my listening. My technology is not as up to date as yours.

  16. I am an journalist and a quilter who is trying to figure out how to combine what I write with what I quilt. I love this interview! I listened to this while recovering from gall bladder surgery. I’m inspired to head to my studio, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow when the effects of the pain meds wear off! Come to think of it, I might not. The altered state might be what I need to be creative! Just kidding, but the interview was inspiring. I will listen to it again and I have “The Girl Who Stopped Swimming” on my list of “must reads.” Thanks for sharing it.

  17. I found your podcast several days ago & have started back with the first podcast & am trying to listen to as many as possible each day as I sit & hand quilt a wedding quilt which needs to be finished in time for a wedding shower in two weeks & 2 days. My husband passed by & said,”You are having your own little quilting bee.” That is what it feels like. I have listened to 32 podcasts so far & have learned quite a number of things. Thank you so much for your time & effort from a fan in the Houston, Texas area.

  18. I loved tha podcast and am excited to read both books suggested. I also love to read!! The interviews were great and Pamela’s quilts are amazing. I always learn about something new on your podcast. I have been a listner since the beginning and can’t wait till each new podcast is posted. I loved the anniversary show and your husbands music mix was great. I couldn’t stop chuckling. Keep up the great work!!

  19. Annie!

Loved the podcast, it was so fun listening to 2 creative people in different mediums speak about their processes and find them to be so similar. I LOVE to read, but I rarely let myself “have at it” because I get consumed with the reading and I have a family to care for, and things don’t run so well when mom is involved with her book. So I save them for vacations/travel etc. . . I will definitely have to get Joshlyn’s book for my next trip. My 3 teenagers have read all the Twilight books. I’m sure they’re signed up for the next one too.

Thanks for such an entertaining podcast!

  20. Hi Annie,

I really enjoyed this podcast, and the books sound great! I, too, stay up late finishing books – just can’t tear myself away! Of course, I also stay up late when I get close to finishing a quilt, a knitted item, etc.

    Linda
