Another word about “Twelve by Twelve”

Oh, so I didn’t want the podcast to be extra long, and I wanted let Diane and Helen speak for themselves — so there was a lot that I didn’t say. I don’t think I gave the book an adequate enough review, nor gave you enough time to comment for the opportunity to win the book, because the podcast went up late.

So, the winner will be drawn at midnight tonight, april 9th. There’s also another reason… I’m going to do a special podcast that will be released tomorrow, Sunday with a new Give-Away.

about Twelve by Twelve

When I was scrambling to edit and do the intro to the podcast, I could not find my copy of the book!! How can I speak about it just from memory? Last evening, before hunkering down to knit, I found the book in a pile of other books for review. I sat down with the book instead of knitting and began reading it from cover to cover.

(I wish I could have super-imposed the cover of Twelve by Twelve here, but alas, I’m not that clever ; )

The thing about this book is that you MUST read it cover to cover.

It’s not just about the quilts…

(Quilts from top to bottom:

Dandelion by Terri, Chocolate by Diane, and Passion by Gerrie)

although it is a lot about the quilts.

But it’s also about the techniques, which is are wide and varied, as are the styles in which each of the Quilt Artists worked.

It’s also about their commitment to the project, their support systems at home that helped them accomplish their goals, but it’s most about:

The Art Quilters…

(Quilts from top to bottom:

Community by Terry, Twelve by Karen, and Twelve by Gerrie)

Incredible, ALL.

This is a coffee table book, I realized.

Deserving a viewing place so others who visit your home can see the beautiful photography, read the profiles and be inspired. And, you can pick it up and resume reading…

There are a couple of comments that I want to share with you that came in yesterday’s podcast:

“Nice interview ladies! And now we can add that in addition to being at Midsommer Quilting and then Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, England, our quilts will also be shown at Quilt Festival in Houston, USA! (Annie, no need to put me in a drawing for the book — I’ve already got one!)”     Kristin La Flamme

I have to say HOORAY!!! We’ll all be able to see them in October!!! And I can bet more than one of these ladies will be there, too. Hmmm, I can I suggest a meet-up, so the fans of the book can meet you all??!! I think that would be a stellar idea ; )

Then… this comment…

“Hi Annie — HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your podcast!! I think I read your home page correctly and your podcast is now 6 years old! Congratulations!”     Diane Loomis

Yes, it’s that time again….

April 9th was the day that I first started to podcast — 6 years ago today!

I’ve talked about a lot of quilty goodness since then and will continue to talk about quilting for a long time to come. Quilting has seen a renaissance in 1976, continued to ride the swell thanks to…

our Quilting Embassador, Alex Anderson, and her legacy of bringing quilting into homes everywhere and inspiring us to quilt, quilt, quilt…

and technology is giving us more ways to enjoy our craft. Quilting will continue to warm our hearts and our homes long after we are gone and our posterity continues to quilt.

Nonnie asked me, “Future podcast you might want to explore…. THE NEW MODERN QUILT GUILDS that are popping up all over the country. Young women coming together to learn how to quilt but with a different sense of style and sensiblity. Their projects are different, their colors are different, their patterns and the way they are learning to quilt is different… yes they are forming their own guilds but they are also learning form the internet.”

I heard ya! It’s on my list!

Ok, since you have til midnight tonight, I want to hear from you — and I’ll pick the winner after midnight tonight. Don’t forget!

Happy Quilting!!

  1. “Happy Birthday” to the Quilting Stash podcast! It was my 1st ever podcast, when I discovered what a podcast was from my “tech geek” son a few years back and I rushed to do a search and found yours – and still my favourite podcast of all! The “bookworm” pic. reminds me of a pic you posted awhile back of your little “peanut” with a some big red glasses – lol! Wishing you many more years of happy podcasting Annie.

  2. Annie–I just logged on to say how much I enjoyed the podcast even though I was too late for the draw! What a nice to suprise to see that I still have a chance to win what sounds like a fantastic book. I really enjoyed hearing your interview about this project with Helen and Diane. What a cool concept in a new twist on the round robin. I am a traditional quilter but it gave me the desire to branch out and maybe put more of myself into my quilts.

Happy Birthday to your podcast. I love it and look forward to each one.

  3. Annie, it is so good to be hearing from you again. Love to win the book but more importantly love to hear what’s going on with you now days. :O)

  4. Happy Anniversary, Annie! I’ve listened to every one of your podcast, except for the last two. Haven’t had time yet. But, I will. I started listening to you about a year or two after you started and went and downloaded all the precious ones and listened to ALL of them, back then. Keep them coming. Thanks for counting me in for the 12 x 12. (Did you get my email with my address for the other giveaway?)

  5. Thank you so much for this creative inspiration podcast! I was realizing this morning that I want to get my creative juices reved up again and what was a new podcast to listen to Twelve by Twelve.
I was doing errands and rushed to finish them to get home and start visiting all the blogs of all the ladies in the Twelve by Twelve group.
I probably would not have looked at the book at all and now I can’t wait to have it in my hand to adsorb.
Thank you Twelve by Twelve ladies and thank you Annie.

  6. Sorry your web site is acting froggy and keeps jumping to a different post when I hit the submit button. I keep getting a security certificate issue when I come here… let see if third time is the charm.

Loved the interview so nice to see long distant friendships that work. I have been playing with art quilt projects recently… mostly as practice to learn my sewing machine. But I am liking the idea of paints and inks to enhance my projects. I have been surfing through the links provided and enjoying myself.

Going to keep my GOOGLE READER VERY BUSY.

  7. wELL that was special … I found I especially liked the photo transfer of the 12 artist, The one with the chocolate was special to me cause that what I always got from my family for my Birthday, but I can not have them any more…. Isn’t it funny how an art piece means different things to different people.

  8. OK, was it pretty obvious that I had not listened to the podcast when I commented on your last blog post? My comment was exactly what you asked us not to do!

Anyway, I do want to say that I love your interviews, Annie. You have a very nice interviewing style. In particular, you know how to play a “supporting role” to the person you are interviewing, but allowing them to tell their story, without interruption, but asking good questions to lead them on when they pause. I’ve never done an interview myself, but have listened to lots, and I am thinking that it is not as easy as it may appear. Yours are among the best.

  9. Congratulations on your podcast anniversary Annie! Having discovered these podcasts, I will download them on the iPod to listen to in my studio – I can hardly wait! Hope I’m lucky enough to win the Twelve by Twelve book.

  10. Enjoyed the podcast and would love to see this book. I am really empressed that 12 women began and ended this project and learned so much together.

  11. I am sitting here listening to this podcast as I type. I’ve been following and loving 12×12 for a long time and am so excited to hear this interview. Now that I have found your podcasts, I’ll have to make them a regular part of my day also! Hope I’m the lucky one today!!

  12. Thanks Debbie! Yes, I did get your info and will send to NJ, if you don’t mind. So good to hear from you!

  13. I love the twelve by twelve gals. I read a couple of their blogs and love watch their pieces in progress. Thanks for sharing.

  14. I loved this podcast! I also love your interview podcasts and hope you do more of them. How about some interviews with more California art quilters who talk about their artistic motivations and design process?

  15. Thank you all, for your great comments! I love reading them.
Sorry for the problems on the website, i’ll have WebGuy look into it.

P.s. the photos with Helen and Diane were sent to me by Helen. Now I have my own copies, after losing them in the great harddrive crash of 2010… So thankful to have them again!

  16. I’m glad your back! Although I must admit, when I found your podcast I downloaded all the back episodes that itunes had, and only recently caught up. So maybe I should be happy for your pause because now I can listen to new episodes as they are released which lets me know about giveaways when they happen instead of several months later. 🙂
    Happy podcastversary!

  17. I am SO happy to have you back Annie. You have been truly missed in your absence.

I do hope you are enjoying podcasting as much as we are. In your absence, I had a chance to check out several other podcasts – a couple were great, but honestly, none were quite like yours.

I think all your listeners hope you will be back on a regular basis. BTW, be kind to yourself – you really do an extraordinary job, and are a wonderful educational source to quilters around the world.

    Lots of Quilty Hugs

  18. So glad you’re back. I love to listen as I am puttering in my garden. And the weather is finally warming up.

  19. I just found your site so hope I’m in time. I’ve been following the 12×12 for some time and regularly check a couple of their blogs. Now I’m off to listen to your podcast.

  20. Hi Annie,
Thanks to your very kind listener, Linda Patrick, who sent me instructions on how to leave a message here, I’m finally able to leave a comment. THANK YOU LINDA …

It is so nice to hear your voice again and frequently, too. I missed you. Just getting your podcasts is getting me thinking about quilting again. I’ve been to the dark (but fun side) of knitting for a few years.

Your interviews are my favorite. You are such a good interviewer.

Hope to see you at Santa Clara Convention center again this fall.

    Cheers,
    Phyllis

  21. Thank you so much for the suggestion, Diane! I certainly will take your challenge to heart and will look for the opportunities to bring more CA Art quilters to the podcast.
