Quilting Stash Program #22 — Interview with my son, Robin about quilting, Baseball and hiking Half Dome. Robin shares pictures of his quilts.

My son is a pretty amazing teenager, complete with attitude and moxie. We ramble a bit, but I hope you hang in there and listen to the whole interview. He is a young man with something to say.

Just as Robin was advancing from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, I found these great flannels, Bear, pine needles, canoes and hatchets, etc. to make this rag quilt. I wanted to celebrate his advancement and thought he could use it on the many campouts that he would attend. He hasn’t taken it to one of the them because he doesn’t want to “get it dirty”.

Here is a picture of Robin at a game that they played at the San Jose Giants Muni Stadium. Robin recalls a game winning Grand Salami with Minors player from Moreland Little League.

And here are some cool websites that will give you more information about Yosemite and hiking Half Dome.

Quilting Stash – Program 21 for August 21, 2005

Interview with my son Ryan, and his fiance, Karen, in preparation for making their wedding quilt. Get to know these two remarkable people, who have each quilted — one more than the other ; ) They both equally appreciate quilts.

Karen talks about her mother, Lynne Flake, who is an award-winning needle artist. Click here to see Lynne Flake’s work. Isn’t her wreath absolutely amazing??

The Embroider’s Guild of America isn’t just about Embroidery. It supports all types of needlework. Check out their website for more information.

Ryan’s Eagle Scout Project — Comfort Quilts for Kids at the Children’s Interview Center in San Jose
This project and the recipient is one that is near and dear to my heart. From the time I knew that my son would try to acheive Eagle rank in the Boy Scouts of America, I knew what I would recommend his project to be. Several agencies, including THE LINUS PROJECT provide quilts for the comfort of children in all situations.
I specifically have a soft heart for children that are in abusive situations and need to be taken from the home. Home is a place that should provide the ultimate care and protection, but sadly, it is not that way in all cases. When children are removed from the home (usually during school or at day care), it is under emergency circumstances and they are not allowed to take any personal belongings with them. That is where comfort quilts come into play.

The Children’s Interview Center is the place in San Jose where they interview children when an abuse case goes to court and the child needs to testify, via videotape, against a perpetrator. After the interview, the child is allowed to pick a quilt from the quilt closet to take with them as their very own.
It was really important for us to add a label to each quilt made so the receiving child knew that there were people out there who are aware of their suffering and that we really care. The label read: “This quilt was handmade with love especially for YOU by:” and then everyone who touched the quilt by cutting, sewing, tying or finishing the quilt signed the label. There were very young signatures to elderly signatures on each label. There was always more than one signature and in the majority of cases, there were many signatures.
This Eagle project was such a fulfilling accomplishment, for Ryan and for everyone involved in it.
If you are interested in the way we pulled this off, I would be happy to share the information with you. Just email me!

Here is the website that Ryan referred to and the fabric he was talking about: Erica’s. This fabric is truly beautiful, and would have been a nice second choice if I hadn’t been able to find the Ribbons and Roses online.

And, yes, Ryan’s all-time favorite movie is “Back to the Future” and he saw the movie when he was 3. I will never forget the day that we visited Universal Studios and Ryan found out how they filmed the hover board sequences — specifically that there was no such thing as a real hover board. He was only 8 and he was absolutely devastated because he was sure that he would be able to get one when he was a teenager.

I hope that you really enjoy this interview!

I Dream of …Quilting?

I bet you thought I was going to say “Jeannie” ; ) Naw, I don’t even know any Jeannies anymore, or even Genie’s and I don’t believe in them anyway. Although, I DO believe in the Quilt Fairy — don’t you?

I dream of Quilting. I dream of quilting in full color. I go to sleep at night thinking of quilts and I wake up in the morning thinking about quilts.

I’m currently working on the design of a wedding quilt for my son who is getting married in November. I have to find “the” focus fabric — I know which one I want but it’s no longer available locally, so I am resorting to the Internet. My pickings, or findings, are slim because it has been so popular. It is the perfect fabric for a color palette and my future daughter-in-law loves that fabric best, so you know the rest of the story — no substitutions will do.

I’m looking for Andover’s “Ribbons and Roses” large floral in the cream background:

I used that fabric for the Prairie Flower class sample:

and for the 50th Anniversary quilt:

and Chinese Coins:

Maybe that’s why Karen likes it so much. She saw me using it a lot. It really is the perfect focus fabric though. So on goes my search.

So have you realized yet that I only have 2 1/2 months to make this quilt and I haven’t started yet? Yep, I really still am in the design stages. I found the perfect block “Steps to the Temple” for the center of the quilt in a House of White Birches book, “365 Fun-to-Stitch Quilt Blocks”. I like putting significant symbolism in quilts that I make for people, and since they will be married in the temple, that block is perfect to have in the center of the quilt. I will make the quilt in medallion style, with several pieced borders surrounding the center.

Today I will draft the temple block in the size that I need it and will pick the additional border blocks.

First, I have to go to a production meeting for Quilting Stash and plan the upcoming quarter programming.

My days are filled with quilting, and quilt-type activities. I guess that’s why I dream about quilting.

And oh, P. S. Yes, I will have the quilt finished in time for the reception in November even though I haven’t started it yet. It will be a Queen size — hey, at least it’s not a California King!!

Passing the torch

We recently had family members come to visit. If you remember, back in a previous blog, we attended the wedding of the century when my husband’s nephew got married for the first time at age 41. We got not only a lovely Shoshone niece, but her four beautiful children. They are a delight to spend time with and this trip was no exception.

One morning, my husband got up to find the 2 1/2 year old playing at my design wall from a basket that she found which had pre-cut shapes. She was trying to imitate the block designs from the quilt that I was working on. Rather than disturb her, Guy grabbed me so I could enjoy the scene. She went on, undaunted, and then wanted me to hold her pieces for her. What a serendipitous moment!

Here are a few of the pictures that Guy captured:

Is this what having grandchildren will be like? I certainly hope so! I think Lacey is a natural.
