I loved talking with Helen at Market!

Here she is, on the left, with Tracey Browning.

I definitely have LOVED everything Australian quilty and embroideries for umpteen years. So it was a pleasure to meet Helen and talk with her about her incredible talent with a needle, and to find out about her distributorship, Pattern Press.

This is from one of her designers. Is this precious or what?! Who ever would have thought of a Pin the Tail on the Donkey quilt for a party?! Including the mask with donkey ears!

Helen is an amazing talent, I think you can see there is no shortage of it here. She just looks at things a different way…

The pink and green quilt on the right is one of the patterns that is in the giveaway…

so…

by now you all know the drill, eh?

Visit Helen’s website, HugsNKisses.net AND her blog, also HugsNKisses and leave me a comment HERE and let me know what you love about Helen’s style and her creations.

I will choose the winner on Friday night, May 27th, and actually, I’m going to choose FOUR winners, since there are 4 patterns to giveaway. How’s that?

Here is a taste of the patterns…

Spring Fling

Palm Beach Sling bag

and a pattern for a Miss M quilt, Simply Circles that I don’t have a pic for.

Good luck, y’all!

More to report, just around the corner!!

  1. Helen’s style is very Australian traditional, but with a twist. Her Colourque’ Technique is beautiful used in Faux Applique. The colored pencil technique looks just like needleturn applique. I also liked her Life is Beautiful quilt because it’s a personal journal quilt and she uses the “quilt as you go” method, which I’m becoming more and more drawn to. I had to chuckle while reading her blog about driving on the wrong side of the road! She also ate a bloomin’ onion (she called it a battered onion)! I have to give her a high five for that–those things kill my stomach! I don’t know about anybody else, but those Moda bags at the Sample Spree sound wonderful!

  2. Love the Palm Beach Sling bag. That would be great for pool time this summer.

  3. I have been to Helen’s site and she is a wonderful person and has so many wonderful creations. I am curious about what kind of paints she was using in the piece I saw on her blog, really vibrant color and liked the smooth look on the fabric.

  4. I am such a huge fan of applique and piecing combined, and then when you add in embroidery, well, I’m in heaven! Helen’s designs are right up my alley. Maybe I have a long, lost Australian ancestor. You know you’re connecting with a designer when you say, I wish I’d designed that. And that’s how I felt about Pretty Maids all in a Row and TIggely Winks.

  5. I am not an embroiderer, so while I admire Helen’s work, there is not much I would be tempted by, but I did see a picture of a quilt on Helen’s blog that I loved, it was the 5th one in her album from the market, with the peacock. Pretty!

  6. I just took an applique class last month for the first time and learned how to make “the perfect circle.” Most of what I learned was too “traditional” for my liking, however looking at the Miss M mother/daughter patterns I’m seeing where I can put this new skill to work. Those quits are so fun!

  7. Annie,
Loved the interview with Helen. Also loved her web sight, especially the new pattern “Tigglywinks”.
It would be perfect for a little girl and I have one in mind! Thank you for all the recent podcast, we are in the process of building/ moving and listening to podcasts in the evening is the only activity I have the energy for!

  8. I love the fresh color combination (favorite color is PINK!). It just makes me happy to look at that cute quilt. The booth in the picture is so eye catching how could anyone not want to go in?

  9. Absolutely love the colors of her redwork embroidery Christmas Quilt! Also love the bag!

  10. I love redwork, so Helen’s embroideries were touching to me. I like her new breast cancer embroidery she was showcasing in her blog. I particularly am drawn to the Chocolate Truffles pattern…not that I like chocolate or anything…hey I’m a quilter!

  11. I love how Helen uses rickrack in her quilts. Places I would never have considered. A touch here and a touch there. Her blog is yummy and the close ups of her embroideries are amazing. She truly loves to create and has great designs for quilting and embroidery. Now to find a shop that carries her patterns.

  12. What I enjoyed about Helen’s work is the lovely and fresh way she has combined embroidery with quilting. The styling and color palette feel updated and are very inviting. Thanks for introducing me to a new talent. Love your show.

  13. Helen’s combination of thoughtful words & sayings with her beautiful execution in fabric and thread are quite inspiring. I think most of us quilters stitch a lot of love into our projects, so seeing that stated expressly feels quite fitting. Oh, and I love the bag! (Never too many bags . . .)

  14. Helen really does beautiful work. The Australians have their own aesthetic that’s so easy to identify – it’s a very distinct look! I love it – it’s so cheerful and happy looking. What I really liked about Helen’s blog was her discussion of stitching as therapy. That’s the main reason I hand quilt – it is my therapy!
