The winner for yesterday’s Hitchcock vs. Chocolate blog is:

Cory! Email me with your mailing address so I can send out your fabulous prize.

Yesterday when I was at the grocery store, I checked out the magazine rack like I always do to see what’s new — even if I was there the day before. The cover of American Patchwork and Quilting caught my eye…

Isn’t the cover quilt a beauty?

It’s funny how immediately you can call something to mind, because this is what popped into it in the middle of the aisle:

Ooh la la — I already have it started! Check out the booty of finished Yo-Yo’s in the pickle jar. That’s not a small jar, by the way, it’s a big ‘un. I can just see how that quilt will look, using my yo-yos.

Even though I had another idea in mind for those, like the Grandmother’s Flower Garden setting for a KING size quilt. I love yo-yo quilts on beds with colored sheets peeking between the open spaces, like this:

Except that my color scheme has changed since I started making those yo-yo’s. It’s ok for one UFO to merge into a new one. Haven’t you ever done that? If not, maybe it’s time to rethink some of your UFO’s!

so… I started previewing background fabrics:

One…

Two…

Three times a charm…

I really like the nice clean look of the yo-yo’s on the muslin. It allows the richness of the soft prints to be showcased:

Nice, huh?

So, I ran over to Joann’s, after clipping my coupon, of course ; )

And… of course my yo-yo’s that are already made are right in between the large size and the extra large size… and I have at least 1,000 circles already cutout and ready to be gathered into those little treasures. (Just look at the photo above if you don’t believe me)

While I was standing in a looooooooong line at Joann’s, I realized that because my color schemes have changed in my house, I would probably not keep the quilt, but give it away. Give it away? Give-Away… what a great idea!!  Ok, a little kooky too.

Here is Give-Away #1:

Yep, the backing fabric, the yo-yo’s and everything inside the box, circles already cut for you and additional fabric just in case you want to make it bigger, or to help piece the back of your quilt! (p.s. not my pickle jar — I need that for the next batch of yo-yo’s, or the magazine)

Then I had this other scathingly brilliant idea as I was going through my UFO  boxes…

the Quilter’s Palette online class is coming up. I wonder if someone would be interested in this UFO:

five blocks already started, and …

the rest of the fabric to make it, including the sashing?

Isn’t the focus fabric beautiful?

you don’t even need to make that quilt, you can use this for something totally different.

Or —  how about a book that you can use to make some pretty clever quilts using your fabric stash? That’s the challenge, using your stash, and not buy anything new. Just this once…

by cute mom, Sarah Bisel

Sarah’s blog, Milk and Honey Designs. I hope I get to meet her at Market.

Ok — so leave a comment and let me know which of the three drawings you would like me to enter you into. Or all three if you would choose ANY of them. I will pick the winner on midnight, Saturday April 16th — so don’t forget to come back and check to see if you’ve won. Also, when you win, you need to email me your mailing address. (I have some give-aways that are waiting patiently for their owner’s addresses…)

  1. What a great giveaway…I love them all!

Last year, my cousin mentioned that she had fallen in love with a yo-yo quilt at some box-store. Of course, I immediatedly started making yo-yo’s. My thought was to put them together with the Grandmother’s Flower Garden setting but I am loving the rows.

    Thanks for the fantabulous podcast!

  2. How generous! I love the fabrics you’ve chosen and the in progress blocks for the Quilter’s Palette class.

thanks for the wonderful podcast! it’s great to hear you again.

  3. I would love to be in the drawing for the Quilter’s Palette because I have a weakness for anything in purple and there are some delicious purples in that stash! 😀

  4. Wow! Your podcasts are coming out so quickly now I’m in danger of falling behind again. Syncing right now, ans planning to listen as I iron tonight.
That fabric for the Quilters Palette is so beautiful! I’d love to see those blocks close up 😉

  5. Hello!!!.. My name is Jessica. I loved your podcast and really liked the 3 giveaways, but especially the first two of them because I really love the feeling of see the UFOs finished after being under “fermentation” for quite a long time!!!

    Warm Regards from Costa Rica!!!

    Jess

  6. I would love to win any of the three quilts! The yo-yo quilt does speak the loudest though! Thanks for all your info.

  7. I have that magazine and was mildly interesting in the yo-yo quilt. Reading your post, I think I’m definitely going to make it! I love your yo-yo colors and the light backing! I’d to be included to win the fabric for them! Thanks so much for this generous giveaway!

  8. This yo yo quilt reminded me of my grandmother’s house, she had one on her guest bed. She used the fabrics from old clothes from my dad and his sister as they outgrew them. It is a wonderful piece of history in our family

  9. Oh, Annie, you are really on a roll. You sure are making up for all the time without any podcasts. I would love to win any of the items. Thank you are being sooo generous!

  10. Annie,
How generous you are! I love your podcast-I listened to it all last year while in the gym recovering from knee replacement. I would love to be entered in the give-aways today. I am trying to ONLY work on UFOs this year! Also, The Trouble with Angels is one of our favorite movies!!

  11. Hmmm…

I really don’t like yo-yo’s. Sorry to those that do. personal preference.

I just won the Quilter’s Palette class, so getting the UFO’s for that wouldn’t work.

I’ll go for the book, even though I don’t have much of a stash since I’m a relatively new quilter.

Annie, you are a treasure to be doing all these give-aways.

  12. Annie, it is so good to hear you back “on the air” – to find out what you’ve been up to (you were my first ever pocast BFF) and WebGuy, Boy Wonder, the dear daughter and of course the darling granddaughter (my middle grandson turns 20 today – go figure – they grow up fast). Life if good. I’ve been behind on my podcasts ’cause I listen to audible books too and get so involved in them I can’t stop to listen to my podcasts, so am in catching up mode.

  13. Thank you so much for the generous giveaway. I love your shows but have to admit that I have got a little behind suddenly – will download this episode as soon as I have finished writing this!! I love yo-yos – I have made a scarf using them and cards, but haven’t been brave enough to start a quilt. I would love to win the yo-yo set.
    thank you Caroline

  14. I love the yo yo’s but probably don’t have the stick to it tiveness if that’s a word – to get them finished. But I love the squares and the fabric from your color pallet class – gorgeous.

  15. I’m also not a big fan of yo-yo’s (making them anyway – but they do look cute!) but I would be thrilled to get a chance at your QP finished blocks and the fabric to finish that QP – I love the one I did from your class (gee have I said it enough times before?) and would love to make another especially form a palette you’ve chosen – what fun! The book would be my 2nd choice. Sarah’s blog is very enjoyable – just had a look. Loving your enthusiasm lately , and genrousity – you’re an inspiration Annie!

  16. How neat would that be to work with your blocks! Love the colors and especially the basket applique. The book is also calling to me. Glad you’re “back on the air.”

  17. It’s so nice to see you having so much fun with the giveaways. The first two are fantastic giveaways, Annie. But, I’m not fussy when it comes to winning, I’ll take any one of them! You mention that you’re waiting for addresses of winners. I hope you got mine that I sent after winning Lyric Kinard’s book. Please let me know.

  18. Annie, I would love to give a good home to the yo-yo’s, especially since so many of the circles are already cut! Who could ask for more? It’s great to hear your podcast again!

  19. Hi, Annie! Glad you’re back podcasting again! Please enter me in all three–they’re all great prizes!
    Judy McNeel

  20. Annie,
Loved your podcast going over the American Patchwork and Quilting! I especially love the sachets on pg 42-what cool gifts! I love give away #1, I would love to make the yo-yo rows! I love started projects so I can get thru them more quickly!
    Emily

  21. I would love to be entered in the draw for the yo yo’s as I wanted to make that quilt as soon as I saw it on the cover of the magazine. I love the colors of your fabrics.

  22. The same thing happened to me! The yo-yo quilt on the cover just grabbed me and I had to purchase the magazine. The quilt had moved me so much that I had to mention about it on my own blog.

Since I do love yo-yo’s, please enter my name into the yo-yo giveaway. I have ideas for yo-yo quilts and most of the work will already be done for me!!

  23. I just arrived at your blog from another blog. Now I will have to bookmark you so I can be a regular visitor! I love yo-yo’s because they make me think of antiques and grandmother’s quilts. Please enter me in the yo-yo giveaway. Thank you so much for being such a kind and generous soul! Melissa

  24. I’d love the yo-yo’s! I’m thinking of starting my own yo-yo project, and this would be a great head start!

  25. Hi Annie,
Wow, three books to choose from. Hmmmmmmm!
I love the title “Fast, Flirty and Fun” ! And well if you are going to have a drawing for it well count me in. I have an entire shelf of fabric stash that is waiting to be made into Fast Flirty and Fun quilts.

  26. Hi Annie, I am enjoying hear your voice SOOOO often these days…Welcome Back!
I think Modern Quilting is being fueled by the designers Denyse Schmidt, Amy Butler, Anna Marie Horner and many others very creative folks. Their fabric is so bright, has large prints , very graphic, retro and just basically fun. I think the fabrics lend themselves to more than just quilt making. There are so many blogs out there which give free tutorials for quilts, bags, jewelry, and everything under the sun. I made some cute bracelets from the tutorial on V & Co blog.
This kind of information is a regular “go-to” for the younger women who are becoming quilters and who use the computer as second nature to get information.

I think quilting has been around for a long time, but I also think “Modern Quilting” is putting a fresh new spin on our long time tradition.

If it’s not too late, please put my name in the drawing for the Fast, Flirty and Fun book.

  27. Quilting is experience a RESURGENCE with younger ladies, us older gals know it has never gone away. The MODERN QUILT GUILD is just new guilds being formed by younger ladies to meet up with other ladies of the same age, interest, skill levels…. more power to them.

Love the pod-casts…. keep them up.

    NONNIE

  28. Darn! I’m so busy I can’t keep up with these to get in on the drawings!!! LOL So sorry to have missed out on this one. A quilter in our guild just shared a yo-yo quilt like this. It is at least lap, almost twin size – GORGEOUS!!! I hope to listen to this later as I finish my new Bop block design 🙂 Have a great day!

  29. Hi, I missed out on your drawing but enjoyed the podcast and the photos. Someday I hope to take one of your on-line classes. I need to catch up on my podcast listening so I can get in on your next drawing. Thanks for the inspiration you give to all of us quilters.

  30. Annie, I received the fabrics and the chocolate. Thank you so very much. The fabrics are beautiful and the chocolates are divine. Take care and God bless, Cory

  31. I’m just catching up to you and your latest podcasts, Annie! However, I had to comment on this blog/podcast, re: what was ‘overheard’ about ‘quilting making a come-back’. I had the very same comment made to me yesterday at church, about *both* knitting and quilting. LOL! I had to ask myself, “Where have these people been?” Of course, they are the same folks who saw my art quilts at a recent city art exhibit and sale, and told me I had “a nice little hobby.” Sigh! More opportunities for public education!

Keep up the good work, Annie!
