And Give-Away-A-Day starts today!! Leave a comment for a chance to win your very own copy of Lyric Kinard’s book, Art+Quilt. The winner will be drawn and announced in tomorrow’s blog. Good luck!!

I learned a looooong time ago, and after a few painful lessons, that the Quilt will tell you what it wants. And I listen, even when I groan under the additional work that it’s going to cost me. But — I am never unhappy with the outcome. On the contrary, if I didn’t listen, I would look at that finished quilt and remember what I COULD have done with it – and that I just really wanted “good enough” after all, which never is.

Here is the quilt that I created for a beginning Hand Applique class at my LQS:

Pretty simple, yes?

Then, because I can never leave well-enoough alone, here is the additional way they can make their quilt:

Also very pretty. I actually really love the hearts on-point and to add a plain square to set off the hearts.

So the more I looked at this quilt on the design board, the more it kept calling me… “make this little change”

Oooh, look how the turquoise fabric I purchased for the other quilt sets off the coral hearts!

Then, and here’s the BIG then, I saw the possibility of this:

Which transformed into this:

And just sets off the hearts in the quilt in this very pretty little way:

So now, I’m embroidering those four squares and eight inset-triangles like there is no tomorrow. Man, it takes time. So I’m entertaining myself with this:

And oh my, how I love it! (available on Netflix instant streaming)

Lastly here is a recent picture of the “little peanut”, Cambria:

and now, don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win Art+Quilt… and then come back tomorrow to see if you’ve won, and what the next Give-Away will be!

  1. Great podcast Annie – hearing you talk, which I’ve dearly missed, is getting me back into “quilting mode” as I listen while I sew! We’ve always paid very high prices here in Canada for good quilting cottons ($14/yd would be GOOD here!) so am dreading to see how high costs will go. On the bright side our $ is very high right now- making shopping from the US looking very appealing right now. Your little Cambria, is just sooo darn cute – love seeing the pictures you post. BTW – can one ever tell the quilt to “stop talking” and quit making one work so hard and long at it – lol ?!

  2. I have a bedroom that just informed me that it wanted a very specific type of quilt, not the one I had planned on making for that room. And the last quilt I made kept changing its mind as to how it wanted to look, so I can relate to this. I compare it to characters in a book. So many authors describe their characters as developing kind of on their own – just like these quilts.

  3. I’ve missed you, Pat and Gretchen!! See, its the listeners that make it all worthwhile to me, otherwise I’m just talking to myself (boring!).
I’ve never had a bedroom talk to me, Gretchen, but I HAVE designed rooms around a specific quilt that wanted to be on the wall. What a great comparison, as I love to read and have read and listened to The Help by Kathryn Stockett several times now. I love the changing voices of the women and how their lives unfold.
Pat — you CAN tell it to stop, but that’s when we acquiesce to mediocrity. (Don’t you love that hoity-toity phrase ; ) Nah, really, I think it stops when the quilt is right. If it’s talking to you, it’s not complete ; )
Oh, you’ve both made my day!!

  4. GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK! Yours was the first podcast I have ever heard of …. you turned me into a manica about podcasts…. THANK YOU

I even learned how to podcast myself… It is so much times.

I agree with THE QUILT TELLS YOU WHAT YOU WANT and yes fabric talks to me!

  5. Thanks for reminding me about Big Tent, Nonnie! That’s another thing that was put on hold while I was “recovering”. I’m so glad that you were inspired to do your own podcast! Isn’t it fun?!

  6. Interested in your comments about cotton, Annie. First, I believe the shortage has to do with the weather and its effect on cotton crops in the past year or so. Also, $14 US for a yard of cotton is nothing new to us in Canada. We’ve paid (and still pay) $16-18 CAD for cotton yard-goods for *years*. Just sayin’…

  7. Haven’t had a chance to listen to this podcast yet, but I’m happy knowing it’s there. Nice to see you back regularly. Would love to win Lyric’s book. Thanks for counting me in.

  8. So glad you are back in the swing of things. Can’t wait to hear the podcast.

  9. Hi Annie,
