Aurifil Calendar Girl!

It’s finally here, the month of June with all of its’ intrigues — like rain and chilly weather in normally sunny California. Now, lest you think that this is an anomaly, it rained the second week of June in 1972 and the graduation had to be moved indoors. It’s great stay-inside-and-quilt weather, which is just what I did on Saturday…

It turns out that I am the Auriful designer of the month for JUNE!

In a previous blogpost, It’s All About the Thread I talked about how much I love to use Aurifil thread.

In today’s blogpost, I want to share my AuriBuzz page with you.

You may learn some things about me that you didn’t know…

In fact, Aurifil has been super generous with a giveaway…

and… if you go and visit AuriBuzz and then comment back here…

YOU will have a chance to win an Aurifil Sample pack, and there will be several winners!

this is a sample of how many I have to give away…

So, make a creative comment and I will pick the winners on Tuesday, June 7th.

In the meantime, check out the websites and Aurifil Designer projects for the other Calendar Girls:

January: Susan Brubaker Knapp

February: Linda Lum DeBono

March: Sarah Vedeler

May: Kaye England

and the rest to come:

August: Jinny Beyer

September: Edyta Sitar

AuriBuzz will be updated at the first of each month with the new Designers projects. Don’t forget that there is a giveaway for the Aurifil Project Winner — for everyone who enters a project based on that month’s design.

Oops — I almost forgot to tell you that there is an Aurifil Thread Retailer in the U.S. where you can buy those hard-to-find Aurifil Threads online! Visit Follow That Thread for all of the details.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!!

  1. Pam– For piecing I use gray, but my preferred colors are the ones I use for machine applique. Gray IS my favorite color of the 50 weight thread ; )

  2. Local Hero is one of my favorite movies too – and love the soundtrack! Very nice interiew.

  3. Hi Annie
I loved the article – although I feel I know you through the podcast there were some things that I learnt about you from the interview – a lovely photo of you guys. I have looked for aurifil over here in the UK and am having trouble finding it – if you know of anywhere good over here please let me know, as I would love to give it a try. Thanks Caroline

  4. Congratulations Annie! I loved your interview, and the free pattern is gorgeous. I guess I should ask this in the Quilter’s Palette class, but do you use the 28 wt for the applique in any of the blocks?

  5. Yes, Diane — whenever I do machine applique, I use the 28 weight Aurifil thread. If I don’t have the color of Aurifil that I need, then I will use Mettler – which is the thread I used to use all the time before I found Aurifil.

  6. that was a great interview Annie. I haven’t tried Aurifil yet, but have wanted to.

  7. Annie,
Loved the article and the free pattern but will have to wait until I have access to a printer!
Don’t you love The Help-I listened to it also?
Congrats on you new addition coming soon!
I LOVE the colors you have in Aurifill-truly beautiful.

  8. I had actually already read the AuriBuzz from a link on Pat Sloan’s website, but I enjoyed reading it again! I love Aurifil threads and bought sample packs from Piece O’Cake when they carried them (birthday present to myself!) But of course, there are so many more colors!!! Thanks for the giveaway!

  9. Hi Annie,
I love the embroidered heart – what a beautiful block that would be in a baby’s quilt (is there a girl on the way?) I’m so glad to hear about Aurifil for machine applique, which I’ve just begun to do, but I was unsure of the thread to choose.
And, oh my gosh, isn’t The Help amazing to listen to?! I was totally drawn in to the story.
Great picture, btw, on the calendar – you’re in excellent company!

  10. I was just at the quilt store this morning buy Aurifil Thread. I could always use more!

  11. Fun interview. I use Aurifil 50 wt. as a bobbin thread when I am quilting, prevents those knots of heavy thread on the back judges hate so much. Haven’t tried it for applique yet but if I find a store that carries it (now that my local store went under) I’ll get some 28 wt.

  12. Hi Annie,

First time visitor. Btw, one of my kiddos shares your first name!
I have one spool of Aurifil in gray and I use it for piecing. I’m finishing up my first applique quilt so I am quite intrigued by and interested in the #28 wt. Aurifil thread you said you use for applique.

  13. I was surprised at the thread colors you use most – they did sound yummy! My basics for piecing are white, cream and gray. I’m just about to start reading The Help. I’ve never listened to an audio book – I’d love to try one. I loved reading your interview!

  14. Hi Annie! Enjoyed the interview. I didn’t know about that whole big career in your previous life. Nice family shot, too. It’s on my agenda to try Aurifil. Somehow I think it might help me achieve the accuracy that eludes me. Thanks for the source. Can’t be had locally as far as I know.

  15. Congrats Ms. June! That was a fun interview to read over there and I’ll go check out the Pat Metheny song. Thanks for the great giveaway. I love using my 50 wt Mako Aurifil for machine and hand piecing. I’m working on a hexagon quilt right now and have loved how fine it is for when I hand sew the little hexies together.

  16. Annie; I have listened to you since your first year and yet have learned more about you from the Aurifil article. Keep up the good work.

  17. Denise– you can get the audiobook of The Help at your local library — one of my favorite sources for FREE books and audiobooks.

  18. Congratulations, Calendar Girl! I loved the interview with Aurifil. I tried Aurifil for the first time recently and love it. So much less lint than my previous threads. I look forward to listening to your podcast for a long time to come.

  19. Hi Annie,
Nice article. I try to listen to all your podcasts. Would you please enter me into the drawing? Thanks!

  20. Wow I’ve always wanted to know a calender girl! So much fun to learn more about you and Aurifil thread. I have a hard time finding it in Canada. Is there a list somewhere of stores in Canada? Thanks.

  21. That was a wonderful interview on the Auribuzz site, Annie! I especially liked the beautiful family photo. I’ve never used aurifil so would love to have a sampler to try it out. Thanks for counting me in, Annie!

  22. I love your blog! As someone brand new to quilting, I would love to get a sampler set of Aurifil to see just how great it is!

  23. Congrats, Miss June. What fun and an honor. I liked your wisdom about making quilts that please you instead of what you think others will like. Great advice! I don’t think I remember hearing you are expecting another new little family memeber, Congratulations!!!

    Beautiful free pattern!!
    Cheers!

  24. I loved that interview, Annie – and what a nice picture of your family!

I too love Aurafil thread, but don’t have too much. It isn’t easy to find, so it always seems easier to just buy what’s at my LQS. A sampler would be lovely!

  25. Great interview Annie and I really like the picture. I have not thought about using a 28 weight thread for machine applique. I will have to try that. Aurifil thread is hard to get in my area but I did find a retailer recently and bought a 50 wt spool to try for piecing.

  26. I loved loved your interview over at aurifil! I was so amazed by your talent. You have the life all of us are striving for and sherri dew would be amazed by you! Thanks for being so open and sharing with us.
    Cindy

  27. Nice article. Congratulations. I don’t think I’ve used Aurifil, but the colors sure are beautiful. In terms of piecing, I go to the grey for almost everything.

  28. Annie, I’m always happy to hear your podcast; and also am a fan of Aurifil thread. Will try the 28 wt. for applique. The Help on audio is great.

  29. Loved the article and your family picture. You accomplish so much, but are an inspiration! Love the purple sampler. Have never tried the Aurifil threads, but would love to!

  30. Wonderful article and the colors and threads in the free pattern are gorgeous. I have never used aurifil, but the colors are gorgeous and I can imagine how nice they would be to use in some art pieces.

    Debbie

  31. What a great idea to use a heavier thread for machine applique! Thanks for your interview with Pat and for all your podcasts, Annie!

  32. I use Aurifil thread (50 wt) for piecing all the time! I’ve never tried the 28 wt thread for applique, though. I’ll have to give this a try!

  33. I have been a little “stuck in the mud” using only one brand of thread often to my dismay. Now I have so much of it that I can’t afford not to use it. Maybe if I could have some free I could break out of my rut.

  34. Annie, I loved the interview. I love Aurifill thread and have been using it for all my piecing and machine quilting. I’ve been using the whites and grey’s and need to get brave and start using some fun colors. Loving your podcasts too.

  35. Annie, I love Rose Ring. Thank you for sharing it with us. I would love to win some Aurifil thread. Take care and God bless, Cory

  36. Congratulations, Annie, for being Aurifil’s June calendar girl! The interview and your family picture were so nice. I clean up my sewing area, too, before I start a new project! I would love to win the thread–I’ve been wanting to try it. I’ve heard such good things about Aurifil thread.

  37. Great interview Annie. And looking at the pictures reminds me that I must get one of those little hot wheels storage boxes. And then i need to go to the link you have in your blog and buy a bunch of thread. I sure wish my LQS would stock more colors. Hmmm, maybe I should tell them that.
    Sue

  38. Love your blog and podcast. I have been unable to get to my sewing room and have a few months of podcasts to catch up on.
I have not tried auirfil but I have bought it to machine quilt my sons going to university quilt. The time pressure is non because he leaves home in September. I am looking forward to trying it.
Loved the interview on the auriful site. You are such a sharing caring person and it shines through.

  39. You amaze me with your knowledge of thread weights… I never thought about it!
I absolutely love deiter uchtdorfs quote. Never heard that before. Very encouraging as I do know who he is. Keep shining your light .

  40. I love the 50 wt for piecing and always seem to keep a spool of 5006, a turquoise/aqua, which I always seem to need in my machine quilting

  41. Annie…
I too have been a fan of Aurifil Threads for a number of years. I was having my own mini-retreat at a hotel keeping my husband company while he was attending a woodcarving class. A shop owner in this little tiny town was just raving about this thread I just had to try. I really didn’t need any more thread, but she was insistent, that I would never use another thread once I tried it. Needless to say she was right!
I loved the quote on creativity… I can’t imagine a life that did not include a creative outlet of some type…. or I guess I should say I wouldn’t want to!

  42. You’re a pinup girl now! Interesting that you picked Sherri Dew to follow for a day. She is inspirational in many ways; I guess I thought of CEO of a publishing company as a man’s job. I was really impressed with her the first time I heard her speak at TOFW. I wonder if she has time to quilt?!
