Program 134 – Quilting with Kids, featuring Claire Graham-Smith and Her Son, Noah Patullo

podcast
Running time: 00:46:12 Size: 21.2 MB
I hope you’ll enjoy this visit from the eyes of a seasoned 12-year-old quilter. Noah is quite impressive! Here is a look at the quilts Noah describes in the interview.

Here is Liam, age 9 and also a quilter, Noah and mom, Claire in front of the quilt that started it all for their family. Check out Claire’s beautiful vest!

Here is Noah’s most recent quilt, the Picnic quilt. I love this picture of Noah, in front of his quilt, in his baseball uniform!

A close-up view of Noah’s Trapunto Butterflies quilt, so you can see the detail of his work.

Noah’s Rivers and Jungles quilt from the Vermont Quilt Festival 2006.

If you’d like to send Noah an email of encouragement, his email address is noah@burlingtontelecom.net

Please share this podcast with a young person! You never know how Noah will inspire their desire to quilt.

Claire has a list of favorite books on Quilting for Kids to share with us:

The Quiltmakers Gift by Gail de Marcken and Jeff Brumbeau. I like to start beginners with a quilt story, this has amazing illustrations.
The Quilt-Block History of Pioneer Days by Mary Cobb offers a nice context for block pattern names. Projects are geared for paper crafts, but could be done in fabric.
Kids Can do it Quilting by Biz Storm- a fun step by step early sewing and quilting project book, for hand and machine.
Kids Can Quilt by Dorothy Stapleton is great. Could be for kids old enough to use it themselves. Good instructions. Even a What Went Wrong section!
Kids Can Paper Piece by Shirley Liby- big chunky fun patterns.
Kids Start Quilting by Alex Anderson- or course! I’d love to do this as a sampler class. I just heard her say on the Quilt Show this week that she would wait on teaching beginners rotary cutting and pressing. (This was on Kim Denault’s show about Raggedy Reverse Appliqu

Program 133 – A Visit With the LizzeBCre8ive Chicks!

podcast
Running time: 01:15:15 Size: 34 MB

Who are these happy women?! Well, take a listen to the podcast and you’ll find out that they are both named Elizabeth Hawkins! Beth, on the left – Liz on the right, are married to the Hawkins brothers. They each have 4 kids and are typically busy moms.

I hope you’ll really enjoy getting to know these super-creative quilters and be inspired by their story.

Here is a picture of the quilt that I referred to as the quilt that made me stop in my tracks in front of their booth, the first time I met them: “Oh, Say, Can You… Be!”

This quilt was inspired by this great man, who we share a common awe of:

Gordon B. Hinckley, who encouraged us to “Be True, Be Strong, Be Kind, Be Brave, Be Loyal, Be Happy” — and good advice for everyone.

Please visit the LizzieBcre8ive website to enter the drawing for some cool give-aways from these groovy chicks.

I’m pleased to share my dear friends with you in this podcast, which I have been dying to do for a long time. I hope you enjoy listening in!

Scheduling what’s around the corner…

In trying to keep with a schedule that will allow for a new podcast each week, at the same time so I can meet your expectations…

I just wanted to let you know that this week’s podcast will be up on Tuesday instead of tomorrow. I’m (finally!) going to be able to do a show with two of my favorite quilting Moms — “the Lizzie B girls”, as Kirsten and I affectionately call them.

We have quite a show in store for you, and personally, I just can’t wait to talk with the gals.

So, hang in there — only two more days!!

Running time: 00:43:56 Size: 20.2MB

Here’s Barbara in her beautiful home. Don’t you love the quilt on the stairway? It’s a one-of-a-kind quilt that Barbara made, not one of her patterns. I LOVE it!

And the breath-taking view from Barbara’s balcony…

Don’t forget to visit Barbara’s website at Quilt Soup. Barbara has a monthly newsletter that she sends out, filled with information and a recipe.

…with my son, Ryan
podcast
Running time: 00:28:25 Size: 19.6MB

as we talk about the five W’s of Podcasting.

Ryan and his wife, Karen, are going to start a podcast about being newlyweds. They would like your help with naming their podcast. Should it be “Rings and Things”, “Honey and Headphones:, or … why don’t you suggest a catchy title? If you’d like to join in the fun, leave a voicemail with your vote or suggestion on my voicemail at 408-849-4882.
The lucky winner will receive a full set of West of Baltimore patterns, autographed by me ; )

Happy quilting… and podcasting!

Happy 4th of July!!

It’s a lazy day in California. No phones ringing, no shipping to do today, and getting ready for my trip to Nauvoo, IL next week.

We’re writing the newsletter for July today — yep, that slipped by us ; ) but we ARE working on it. We’ll have an article by Kirsten and a brand-new recipe courtesy of WebGuy.
Now, if you’re still having problems receiving the newsletter, there IS a fix and instructions on the right-hand column of the homepage. Just scroll down a little bit.
Most of the receiving problems are still coming from COMCAST email recipients and are being automatically blocked as SPAM. I’m no longer using COMCAST for this reason, but if you are, you will still have a problem getting the newsletter or email replies from me, unless you use the fix that WebGuy researched for you.
Those who are using EARTHLINK for email are also having problems. You need to allow email from me in order to see it.
I love the technology but sometimes it can be SUCH a hassle!

In honor of the 4th of July, I’m sending you a little display of fireworks and hope that you have a great day, celebrating the independence of America…

and Happy Quilting!
